NOTICE TO ALL COUNSEL – Telephonic Appearances
For appearances commencing in May 2010, we will join a growing number of Judges in Maryland and around the country in using CourtCall, to conduct telephonic appearances by counsel (“CourtCall Appearances”). In our courtrooms, CourtCall is the system used in the following circumstances in the Civil docket:
- Pretrial settlement conferences are held in Room 511 Mitchell. Parties or persons not counseled and excused from attendance by prior court order will be required to participate by CourtCall. CourtCall is not available for use by attorneys for pretrial settlement conferences.
- In cases where the presiding judge gave prior permission, attorneys can participate in scheduling conferences by CourtCall.
- Professional witnesses can participate in Fast Track cases if the presiding judge gives prior permission.
CourtCall will be used in Civil and Domestic dockets in the following circumstances: Attorneys within the Beltway can participate in Postponement Court by CourtCall.
Attorneys outside the Beltway may continue to use the current phone system for single callers only. All conference calls must be arranged privately by counsel so that only a single incoming call to the Court is placed, or the attorneys may all agree to use CourtCall. No conference calls through cell phones will be permitted.
When the Court permits a telephonic appearance using CourtCall, Counsel should contact CourtCall by serving and filing with CourtCall (not the Court), NOT LESS THAN THREE (3) COURT DAYS BEFORE THE HEARING DATE, a Request for Telephonic Appearance Form and paying a fee of $55.00 for each CourtCall Appearance. (There are no subscription fees) An exception to this rule is granted for calls to any Postponement Court. A request in these cases may be made up to four (4) hours before the time of Postponement Court.
A CourtCall Appearance is scheduled as part of a Court’s regular calendar, and all counsel who has filed their request form and paid the fee. They may appear by dialing the Courtroom dedicated toll-free teleconference number and access code (if any) provided by CourtCall, LLC on the confirmation faxed to your office. A pre-hearing check-in will occur five minutes before the scheduled hearing time. The CourtCall Appearance is voluntary and may be planned without the other party’s consent, and the Court continues to reserve the right to reject any request. In matters where only one party elects to make a CourtCall Appearance, the case will be heard on the Court’s speakerphone provided by CourtCall.
